  • Launch an independent inquiry into the NZ SAS's involvement in civilian casualties in Afghanistan
Compelling evidence that the New Zealand SAS was responsible for a raid on an Afghan village in 2010 in which six civilians were killed, including a 3 year old girl, and another fifteen wounded, was presented in the book 'Hit & Run' by investigative journalists Nicky Hager and Jon Stephenson. It's imperative that a full and independent inquiry is held into these deaths. There is now evidence that in 2010 in Afghanistan several actions, including a raid, by the New Zealand Defence Force may have broken international law. The New Zealand Defence Force has referred to a joint assessment into the raid conducted by ISAF and the Afghan security forces. These ISAF assessments do not override the obligation of states to conduct their own independent investigation into any civilian casualties involving their troops. In this case, that obligation falls on New Zealand. We call on you to order an independent inquiry. This is crucial not only for the integrity of New Zealand and its operations overseas, but also for the casualties, and their families, of the raid.

  • Hunger Strike for Gaza: Fund UNRWA Now!
We request the Aotearoa New Zealand government:  -       Resume and at least double humanitarian funding for UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency), and announce this immediately. -       Investigate claims that New Zealand company Rakon may have made components used in weapons used by Israel, and take all necessary steps to assure itself that no New Zealand companies can in future export any components that could end up in weapons used against civilians. Suspend exports of these components until the investigation is complete. -       Withdraw NZ troops from the Red Sea. The New Zealand government is complicit in the genocide in Gaza. We must take these tangible steps to oppose Israel’s actions and stand with the Palestinian people.

  • No Means No - Show NZ Cricket condemns sexual violence
NZ Cricket should only select Black Caps that every New Zealander can feel proud to be represented by. Scott Kuggeleijn's description of his own behaviour does not meet these standards - or the Players Association standards for sexual relationships. During his rape trials in 2016 and 2017, he told the court "I tried [having sex] twice, like she might have said 'no, no' a few times but it wasn't dozens of times." In the #MeToo era, selecting men who think sexual acts are ok unless someone says no "dozens of times" is just not cricket. NZ Cricket must demonstrate they care about ethical integrity and respect for women by developing processes to ensure those who play for New Zealand will not embarrass.us.

  • Be kind to migrant workers - we need pathways to residency
The government should support “pathways to residency” for “normally resident” migrant workers who have made New Zealand their home and deserve a place of sanctuary in today's post-Covid world. We ask the Government to immediately: ★ Create a new Pathway to Residency temporary visa available to anyone currently on an essential skill or graduate job search visa who has been working and/or studying for five years or more. ★ Allow 'normally resident' New Zealanders stuck overseas to return to New Zealand on the same basis as citizens. ★ Offer migrants who may have overstayed their visas pathways to residency if they have made New Zealand their home and are without criminal convictions. ★ Provide an extension of the period for low-skilled visas (from the current 6 months to 12 months or longer). ★ Postpone the stand-down requirements which are coming into force in 2021 so a review can be held on long-term policy changes needed for this sector in the post-Covid world.

  • Tell Anne Tolley and the National Government you want specific homelessness policy now!
Dear Minister for Social Development, With the ever growing social issue of homelessness in New Zealand, we ask you to: 1: Create specific, effective government policy that tackles homelessness as a distinct social issue. Currently New Zealand has none. 2: Add homelessness to the Social Development portfolio to bring us in line with the many other OECD countries which tackle the issue directly.

  • OPEN LETTER: Stop sending our plastic waste to developing countries
Open Letter to the Rt Hon Jacinda Ardern, Prime Minister of New Zealand We the undersigned urge the Prime Minister to immediately ban all plastic waste exports from New Zealand. This is because large volumes of these plastics are being burned, buried, dumped, or on-sold in the recipient countries instead of being recycled. Banning waste exports means that New Zealand will transition more quickly to a safer circular economy in which plastics are minimalised. If we ban waste exports, it will incentivise us to rapidly move away from importing, manufacturing, distributing and exporting toxic and unnecessary single-use plastics. This includes promoting reuse, refill, and repair alternatives, processing our recycling safely within New Zealand, and ensuring companies take responsibility for the full lifecycle of plastics.

  • Support the Lets Get Wellington Riding Vision
Dear Wellington City Council, E-bikes and e-scooters provide incredibly affordable and healthy point to point transport in communities that have traditionally been underserved by both public transport and the high cost of car-based mobility (in addition to the climate benefits obviously). Safe infrastructure will make a big difference in seeing people from the ages of 8-80 out riding. We urge you to consider the Let's Get Welly Riding Vision and build a world class 'riding' city within the next 10 years. See more detail here: https://talkwellington.org.nz/2019/the-lets-get-welly-riding-vision/
