Auckland needs a Night ShelterWe ask Auckland Council to help provide a night shelter. Auckland had a night shelter until 2012. The number of people sleeping on the street in Auckland city centre doubled in the two years following the closure of the night shelter (Auckland City Mission research). All other major cities in New Zealand have a night shelter, as do many other cities throughout the world. Sleeping on the street is unacceptable.2,310 of 3,000 SignaturesCreated by Audrey van Ryn

Don't scrap the Broadcasting Standards Authority. Strengthen it!Responsible, trustworthy media is the backbone of functioning democracies. We need media that are honest, reliable, and uphold the law and basic ethical principles. The government's plan to scrap the Broadcasting Standards Authority (BSA) will make Aotearoa New Zealand's media less trustworthy, less balanced, and less reliable. It will allow more misinformation to be spread, not just through social media and online media but on radio and television. It will weaken our democracy, eroding trust in media further, and encouraging more vile, dishonest, divisive and hateful media, like we now see in the United States. Don't scrap the Broadcasting Standards Authority. Don't replace it with weak self-regulation by the industry. Instead, put in place the recommendations of the government's 'Safer Online Services' research project which incorporates the best of the BSA and applies it to online media. All media including television, radio, newspapers and online media would come under industry self-regulation but with real statutory penalties for irresponsible media organisations that go rogue. It's an inexpensive and effective solution that is working well in Australia and the United Kingdom. We need better regulation like this. Not worse as a result of scrapping the BSA.7,045 of 8,000 SignaturesCreated by Better Public Media Trust

Include churches in the Royal Commission of Inquiry into historical abuseTena koe Prime Minister, Rt. Hon Jacinda Ardern Please expand the Terms of Reference of the Royal Commission of Inquiry into Historical Abuse in State Care, to include faith-based institutions, including churches and schools. Catholic and Anglican church leaders have called for the churches to be included in this Inquiry as a way to achieve truth, justice and reconciliation. (Radio NZ 26 March) This is especially important for victims or survivors who have been abused in these institutions. Including these faith-based institutions will help ensure that they have appropriate policies and practices to respond to allegations of abuse in the future. Failing to include them will convey a message that these institutions do not have the same duty-of-care expected of others.607 of 800 SignaturesCreated by Leo McIntyre

Protect Northland from Covid Now!Our hope is for our local community to be protected from Covid. Right now, Northland is at risk of Covid rapidly expanding in our area which would be devastating for our local people. We have low vaccination rates and high risk due to co-morbidities in the region. Thankfully, the Northland Iwi Border Patrol have shown leadership by looking after our community when we need it the most. They are volunteering their own time to take care of others by slowing the spread of Covid into our vulnerable communities. But they need more support now to continue this work. We, the undersigned, ask Chris Hipkins, Minister for Covid 19 Response to help our local community by: Empowering the Northland Iwi Border Patrol with resourcing and authority to protect our vulnerable and marginalised communities so they can effectively help prevent the further spread of the Covid pandemic into our region. Specifically we ask for temporary lawful authority for the Northland Iwi Border Patrol to immediately: (1) Be able to question and if necessary, stop vehicles from crossing the border (2) Be provided with financial resources to help the iwi look after our community through the patrol (3) Be provided with logistical support to keep the patrol in place80 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Mike Finlayson

Increase funding for legal aid in Budget 2020No matter who we are, or where we’re from, we all deserve access to justice. But right now, successive governments have underfunded Legal Aid to the point where access to good legal representation is reserved only for the rich. We, the undersigned, call on Finance Minister Grant Robertson and Justice Minister Andrew Little to make sure our legal system cares for all of us, regardless of our bank balance, by significantly increasing funding to legal aid and the provision of cultural reports in Budget 2020.1,266 of 2,000 SignaturesCreated by Team ActionStation

Choices for our Children - Whanau against Auckland Kindergarten Association changesDear Simon Jones, This petition is to show you, the Chairman of the Board of the Auckland Kindergarten Association (and The Ministry of Education, and other Kindergarten Associations in New Zealand proposing similar strategic changes) that families and communities do not support the changes currently being rolled out. These changes will mean: • In most of your kindys the morning session will be abolished and only a 7 hour day will be offered. • There will no longer be term breaks and families must pay even if their child does not attend. • It will cost whanau to use their 20hrs free ECE. • Teachers will lose hundreds of hours of non-contact time per year. We strongly believe your new strategic directive signals a fundamental change in the concept and tradition of kindergarten in New Zealand society and are not in the best interests of children. We are advocating on behalf of our tamariki, our taonga. They must be put first in all your choices, not second to “the millions of dollars in lost government funding…left in the government’s coffers” (Tanya Harvey, AKA CEO, March 2017). We expect robust governance of the Auckland Kindergarten Association to include consultation with families, communities and individual kindergartens to inform your strategic direction, rather than be part of the implementation of that plan. We do not support “bums on seats” early childhood education, or the current funding model that promotes this. We urge you to make the best interests of children your primary concern. Please stop the roll out of the changes now. Reconsider your options to manage funding and make kindergarten a sustainable model for the future without compromising the wellbeing of our tamariki and eroding the wonderful tradition of kindergarten.2,250 of 3,000 SignaturesCreated by Marnie Wilton
