Save Auckland's Marine Reserves and Waterways

Save Auckland's Marine Reserves and Waterways

We call on Auckland Council to fund the essential programmes that are designed to improve sediment and contaminant control in our waterways.

Why is this important?

Your support is urgently required as the Auckland Council will soon make decisions to cut funding for programmes that are designed to improve sediment and contaminant control in our waterways.

A Sediment Programme is vital for our marine reserves and coastal waterways, however, the Chief Planning Office advises the planned Sediment Programme may be reduced due to a lack of budget.

The Auckland Council Emergency Budget proposes reducing the programmes of the Healthy Waters Department and the Chief Planning Office.

The budget cut will jeopardise Council’s ability to meet and support its obligations required by the National Policy Statement for Freshwater Management (NPSFM), as it will negatively affect the Council’s ability to manage how much sediment and pollution is released into the Hauraki Gulf.

This will affect the programme’s next step to improve sediment controls on large-scale greenfield developments and improve transparency between compliance performance and iwi / community expectations of water quality.

This will have devastating consequences on the health of the Long Bay Okura Marine Reserve and other important estuaries and waterways around the Auckland Region, that are affected by the sediment from coastal development.

Your support is urgently required as the Auckland Council will soon make decisions to cut funding for programmes that are designed to improve sediment and contaminant control in our waterways.

The future of our waterways depends on action, please sign this petition to show your support.

Reasons for signing

  • This cause is very important, but why are the council and rate payers paying for this? The cost of sediment management should be built into the development levy paid by developers to the council. If the development is not profitable when all the costs are included it should not go ahead. Ratepayers should not be subsidising the development by picking up these costs.
  • Multiple decisions of the Envirornent Court and others were supposed to protect the Marine Park and the sea adjacent to Long Bay. It seems there have been and continue to be major failings in achieving that goal. Not ensuring the requirements are fully met is a travesty. And why should the community at large be meeting the costs of maintaining and looking after our natural capital? Perhaps there are opportunties to bill the developers?
  • I live on the North Shore and have seen the devastating impact of negligent development on our beautiful and precious marine environment. Our grandchildren should be gifted a marine environment that is pristine and demonstrates how we have been careful guardians of these precious resources.
