No child should face grief unprepared – grief education belongs in every school

Grief Education in Schools Aotearoa (GESA)
That the House of Representatives require grief education to be taught in schools from years 0 to 10, and be included in teacher education and ongoing development for all school staff.

Why is this important?

By eight, 35% of NZ children experience a family member’s death - for 1% of children, that’s a parent. Yet, many of us don’t know what to say when someone dies – often we say nothing. We at GESA believe grief education can normalise grief, reduce fear, build emotional literacy, strengthen peer support and reduce isolation. England requires grief education in its national curriculum from Sept 2026 – we believe NZ should also prepare young people for the losses that are inevitably part of life.

Please sign and share this petition with all your contacts and networks. It takes only a minute and would benefit the thousands of tamariki and rangatahi who are bereaved each year.
