Make Matariki a public holiday

Make Matariki a public holiday

Amend the Holidays Act 2003 to add a public holiday that marks Matariki.

Why is this important?

On Tuesday 19 May 2020, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said more public holidays for Kiwis to experience New Zealand is among a number of things the Government is "actively considering" to encourage domestic tourism.

With the Māori new year coming up, now is the perfect time to make Matariki a public holiday.

You can read more about Matariki here:

Reasons for signing

  • Way more Kiwi, than having a public holiday for a British monarch.
  • Learning more about Matariki and celebrating it more with each passing year has been a huge positive force for me. Not only has it helped me reconnect with my local hapu and learn more about my whakapapa, but it has also given me the opportunity to educate and encourage respectful learning about te ao Māori with others. If Matariki is considered a significant event for Māori, it should be just as significant for our whenua, for all the people of Aotearoa! Fully support this initiative. Arohanui.
  • We all need an extra holiday. Holidays improve well being and therefore improve our work and productivity.
