Stop the approval of a liquor store in Longview, Lake Hāwea

We are calling on the Queenstown Lakes District Licensing Committee to decline the liquor licence application for this site.

There are many ways to allow responsible alcohol sales in a community, but this location — in close proximity to areas used daily by children and families — is not appropriate.

Why is this important?

A 330m² drive-through liquor store has been granted resource consent in the Longview subdivision of Lake Hāwea — in close proximity to a children’s playground, a school bus stop, and a growing residential neighbourhood.
The resource consent was not publicly notified, meaning residents had no opportunity to give feedback before it was approved.
If the liquor licence goes ahead, it will result in a level of alcohol outlet density significantly higher than in many larger towns and cities in New Zealand — sending a concerning message about the priorities being set for this community.
Under sections 105 and 106 of the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012, the District Licensing Committee must consider both the likelihood of alcohol-related harm and the effect on the amenity and good order of the locality.
In this case, the proposed drive-through liquor store is located in close proximity to a children’s playground, a school bus stop, and a growing residential area, which significantly undermines both of those objectives.
The outlet’s scale, location, and drive-through model are likely to increase accessibility and visibility of alcohol in a setting where children and families gather daily — directly contradicting the Act’s intent to minimise harm and protect the character and functioning of the neighbourhood.

Alcohol harm affects people, families, and communities across New Zealand. We know from both research and lived experience that the placement, density, and visibility of alcohol outlets matter — especially in areas where children are present and where people live, work, and play.

Lake Hāwea is a growing rural community with a high proportion of young families. A liquor store should not be part of the commercial development in a subdivision intended to support safe, healthy family life.
Residents were not given a voice in this process.

This petition is part of ensuring that voice is now heard.
