Increase Homelessness Support on the North Shore
To the National MPs based on the North Shore - Dan Bidois, Mark Mitchell, Erica Stanford and Simon Watts:
Recent media coverage and a packed public meeting have made one thing clear: the North Shore urgently needs stronger advocacy on homelessness.
Homelessness is rising due to changes in transitional and social housing, cost-of-living pressures, and poor political decisions. Real people—men, women, children, Takatāpui, and seniors—are being left without a safe place to call home.
In just two years, homelessness on the Shore has increased by more than 20%. De Paul House and the Salvation Army in Glenfield are seeing record levels of need, even as funding cuts hit the very services that keep people housed, fed, and supported. Without action, this situation will only worsen. The Government’s plan to “move on” homeless people from the CBD risks pushing more people into our community without providing the resources needed to support them.
Local services are already stretched to breaking point. We need immediate Government action: more transitional housing for singles and couples on the North Shore, restored funding for community organisations, and proper resourcing for social services that have been steadily eroded. These steps will help people regain stability, independence, and dignity.
Our community will not stand by while people are forced to sleep rough. It’s time for our local MPs and the Government to prioritise this issue and ensure every person on the North Shore has a safe place to live.

Why is this important?
- The North Shore is already feeling the pressure: services are stretched, demand is growing, and funding for key community organisations has been reduced.
- There is not enough transitional housing support on the North Shore, particularly for couples and singles.
- The Government's introduction of "move on" legislation is going to increase the number of people sleeping rough on the North Shore.
