Make disposal information on packaging compulsory

We request it becomes compulsory for suppliers to include information about the disposal of the packaging and the product, at the end of the life of the product, on the packaging.

Why is this important?

The Waste Minimisation Act 2008 states everyone involved in the lifecycle of the product has responsibility to ensure waste from using the product is minimised.

The producer actually has a major role in product stewardship as they decide on the final composition of the product and packaging. This will determine disposal methods and the longevity of the product. Consumers who buy products are generally not aware of the Act and should not need to care.

If the producer required to provide disposal information they will be showing they are taking responsibility for the disposal and providing this information enables users to comply with the act.

It will ensure consumers are aware of the disposal options at the time of purchase and can make an informed choice. Producers will also become aware of disposal options and some are likely to be inspired to look for a more environmentally sustainable option.
