Ban New Fossil Fuel Cars

We need to follow the lead of other countries and set a date to ban the import of new fossil fuel-powered cars.

Why is this important?

We know that fossil fuel cars have no part to play in our future transport system, so we are urgently calling on you as the Minister of Transport to set a deadline for the phase-out of fossil fuel vehicles.

Continuing to import dirty vehicles is a major contributor to air pollution, city livability, and most critically, the rapidly worsening climate crisis. Currently, over 70% of New Zealand’s transport emissions are from cars, SUVs, Utes, vans and light trucks.

New Zealand must join the growing number of countries that are taking bold steps to transition to clean and sustainable transportation. Many similar countries already have concrete, binding plans to ban fossil fuel cars: Norway by 2025, the UK*, Germany, Iceland, the Netherlands, Sweden and many others by 2030.

By banning the sale and use of fossil fuel vehicles, we can reduce our carbon impact, improve public health and create new jobs in the clean energy sector. Setting a date provides certainty for everyone, and avoids us locking in emissions as the climate crisis worsens.

Viable alternatives exist today, including public transport, walking, wheeling a wheelchair, scootering, biking, and electric vehicles. A ban on fossil fuel cars must also be met by prioritizing investment in public transport and active mobility infrastructure and continuing or expanding the clean car rebate scheme, so that all Kiwis have access to affordable and convenient clean transportation options.

It is clear: we must act now or suffer the consequences. By banning the import of new fossil fuel vehicles, we can help to protect our planet and secure a livable future for our children and grandchildren.

Aotearoa’s Government needs to step up and show some leadership. Ban new fossil fuel vehicles now!
