Talking Te Tiriti

With the news full of stories about how the Government is breaching Te Tiriti o Waitangi (The Treaty of Waitangi) and the Treaty Principles Bill opening for public submissions soon, we need to be ready to show up en masse for Te Tiriti with confidence. That means helping our families, friends and neighbours understand why honouring Te Tiriti is important, and beneficial for everyone in Aotearoa and get onboard with taking action to defend it. For many of us that means having conversations with them.

Having conversations can be hard, especially when you aren’t sure where someone stands on the issue - even harder when you've heard them repeating unhelpful information. That’s why the team from Tauiwi Tautoko are hosting an online session to help you practise having conversations with others about why supporting Te Tiriti o Waitangi and opposing the Treaty Principles Bill is important.

The session will include:
  • A proven framework for having convincing conversations based on connection and values led communication.
  • Some tips for helpful ways to talk about Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the Treaty Principles Bill.
  • Time to practise putting what you've learnt into practice.

Tauiwi Tautoko has been running eight week courses for Tauiwi providing them with proven strategies from the anti-racist toolkit to ‘call in’ racist comments and gently challenge and change racist views since 2018. The techniques they use are informed by years of working with cross-sectoral experts in listening when it's challenging to hear—conflict mediation, therapy, Te Tiriti education, and performance—as well as values-based messaging that can activate progressive values and move people to act to make change.
