Rally for Sheikh Jarrah and Palestine
On Saturday the 15th of May – Nakba Day – Wellington Palestine will be rallying on Cuba Mall (Near "Little India") from 11.00AM till 12.00 Noon.
The rally is called to protest the illegal eviction of Palestinian families from the neighbourhood of Sheikh Jarrah in occupied Jerusalem, the violent suppression of Palestinian protesters by Israeli police and the bombing of Gaza.
Palestinian families are facing violent eviction from their homes in the occupied East Jerusalem neighbourhood of Sheikh Jarrah. The evictions are part of Israel's settlement project which is considered illegal at international law.
Hundreds of Palestinians protesting the evictions have been injured by Israeli police, including in multiple raids by Israeli forces of the Al-Aqsa Mosque where Muslim worshippers were praying during this holy month of Ramadam.
Since then the violence has escalated with the Israeli army bombing the Gaza strip in response to rockets fired by Hamas into Israel, after Israel failed to clear Al-Aqsa. Tens of Palestinians, including children, have been killed, many more have been wounded.
So we are coming out on Saturday to show our solidarity with Palestinians, to demonstrate that Palestinian lives matter to New Zealanders, and to demand action from our Government.
We reject absolutely all forms of racism and settler colonialism, and welcome all those who support this kaupapa to join us on Saturday to stand with Palestine.
